Summer in the city, reprise.

So you think that summer is winding down because it’s September? Kids are back to school, days are getting shorter and the chill is in the night air? Don’t believe it! Things aren’t slowing down yet – around this town, they seldom do for long! Look at the lineup we have to show you this week.

But first, we have to let you know that the Great Beer Festival is SOLD OUT. If you were planning to get tickets while you were here, we’re really sorry, but you’ll have no luck at all – this really is an international and popular event. Be sure to book your spot now for next year’s event, and while you’re at it, book with the Admiral Inn and Suites for your stay in town.

The days might be getting shorter, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any light. Luminaria will make sure there’s plenty of illumination once the sun’s gone down – and it’s better than ever. Needs must when the devil drives, they say, and that’s certainly true in Luminara’s case. With insufficient funding to produce the large scale, one night event that it has been for the past ten years, Luminara organizers and supporters are planning a more wide-spread, neighbourhood based celebration.
Local community centres will host lantern-making sessions for children and adults. Instructions and materials for simple lanterns to carry and also workshops for more complex installations will be offered. People will be encouraged to make a lantern or display to decorate their own house, yard, balcony or window for the week. Community centres will have neighbourhood maps where participants can add their location, creating a map of lights that people can go out and see in their own area. Depending on funding, plans also include the creation of a travelling Luminara procession including costumed characters and musicians that will animate different neighbourhoods on special nights through the week.  Be sure to keep your eyes open for some of the events taking place between Sept 18 and Sept 25.

If golf is your game, then combine pleasure with charity and be sure to sign up for the Mustard Seed Golf Tournament, Sept. 13 at the Olympic View Golf Course. Sponsored by Island Farms Dairy, you can register at Island Farms or the Mustard Seed, and the registration includes the golf car, dinner and a registration gift. And remember, you’ll also be helping out one of Victoria’s best and certainly most needed charities.

forever plaid

If musicals are your thing, then you might want to be on hand for one of the Victoria Operatic Society’s performances of “Forever Plaid“ on Sept. 18 or 19. Forever Plaid is a fast-paced musical comedy, acclaimed worldwide, about four irresistible harmony singers struggling to make it in the 1950’s who are killed in a car accident. More than 40 years later, they return from the afterlife to finally realize their dream.

And if straight theatre is what grabs you, then be sure to be at the Belfry for The Trespassers, the latest play by Morris Panych, which opens the Belfry’s 2010 – 2011 Season. Lowell is a fifteen-year-old boy with no conventional role models. He’s caught between Cash, his born-again mother, and Hardy, his rambunctious granddad whose penchant for gambling and radical socialism has made him persona non grata in town. A mysterious murder in an abandoned peach orchard has brought Lowell to the attention of the police and now he must choose his truth. Or as Hardy taught him, “There’s something in between lying and not lying. It’s called a story.”
